The More Outlets Campaign

Austin Energy is happy to see personal EVs recharging at customers' homes at night, when electrical demand is low. And this is indeed how most EVs are recharged. But on occassion, we will stray a little too far from home while running an erand here or there and we would really like a little "pick me up" recharge time at a publicly available outlet. The More Outlets Campaign is an effort by the Austin EV community to encourage local businesses to allow EVs to recharge at their outdoor outlets.

If you would like to have your outlet listed on the above Outlet Map, please contact us and we'll be happy to list your business here. Further you will get free advertisement on this page and our EV community will be happy to patronize your business. Not to mention the publicity you get from having an EV recharging in front of your store so that everyone can see that your business is green-friendly!

Install an Outdoor Outlet

If you do not have an outlet available in your parking lot but would like to have one installed and participate in this program, please have an electrical contractor install an outlet with the following guidelines:

We are currently looking into getting grant money to help with these installations, but we haven't obtained any funding at this time.

Outlets at City Parking Meters

One special type of electrical outlet could be those installed at selected existing parking meters. Since electric service is already available at all modern digital parking meters, it would not be difficult to modify a few selected meters to support an outlet. To help prevent misuse, the outlet could be wired so that it is only energized when the meter is active (coins have been deposited). Those who park their electric cars at these meters would be able to recharge their cars as long as they have time in the meter. Only a few such meters could be supported in an early pilot program and later expanded until possibly one such meter would exist on every city block.

Unfortunately, the City of Austin is not interested in investing in this type of charging station at this time.
